Call for papers for a panel on African Family and Colonial Law,
ASAUK Biennal Conference, London, Sept 11-13, 2006.

Dear colleagues,

We are organising an interdisciplinary panel for ASAUK Biennal
Conference at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London,
11-13 September 2006.

This panel focuses on 'Shaping the African family: Colonial Law
and Social Change in Urban Centres' and aims to present different
case studies which explore colonial legal systems in different
regions of Africa. The papers will first seek to provide insights
into the social change which Africans experienced in the realms
of family life and social status. They will attempt to reflect
on how the interaction between Africans and colonial powers,
through the newly created legal systems, shaped the mutual
discourse on the African family. We are looking for a third
panelist whose paper will address these issues in
the sphere of family law in post-colonial context.

The deadline for nominating paper-givers is 1 January 2006. Thus, we
would like to get any indication of interest ASAP, and paper abstract
no  later than December 23. Please send an email indicating your
interest and a proposed topic to Marie Rodet mrodet@hotmail.com or
Elke Stokreiter es4@soas.ac.uk
